Peaking: A common flaw in laminate installation

Laminate floors are a great cost-effective option, hardy and largely scratch-resistant, with a variety of high-end looks. It’s also possible for a homeowner to install it themselves, saving even more.

Despite their reputation for ease of use, though, laminates do present problems. And being a somewhat popular DIY project, it’s perhaps not surprising that one common issue is the result of human error.

Peaking is when your laminate floor has high points at the joints (picture upside-down v’s where two boards meet). It happens when the flooring hasn’t had enough room to expand and the two boards push against each other. With nowhere to go, each end pushes up.

If you haven’t installed it yet, make sure to let your flooring sit in your house for at least two or three days prior to installation so it can adjust to the climate.

But if you do see peaking, the good news is that it’s a fairly easy fix. Track the board back to the wall, where the molding is. Remove the molding and trim off enough of the board’s end to allow the floor some space. You also want to make sure the molding isn’t nailed to the floor so as to allow for that expansion.

Peaking can also happen in a large room if there are no expansion joints to help relieve the pressure, says Lumber Liquidators. As a rule of thumb, if the room is longer than 27 feet in any direction, you’ll want to include expansion joints.

It’s August. That means fall tree-planting time will soon be here. If you plan ahead you can choose some trees that will not only offer cool shade and a home for squirrels and birds, but also bright colors.

Trees make a world of difference. They make our cities and neighborhoods more livable. They create quiet places to enjoy, give wildlife a home, and increase our property values.

It was in 1872 that J. Sterline Morton proposed the first Arbor Day to point out the value of planting and saving trees for the benefit of all.

In 1872, planting trees was a good idea. In 2020, it’s an even better one. The shade of a mature tree keeps homes cooler in summer and provides a windbreak in winter.

Now is the time to select the location for this new addition to your landscape, to think about what type of tree would be best, and to set a date for the big event.

And if you decide to sell your home in the future, it’s a plus for most buyers, so think adding value too.

This morning’s jobs report was a major surprise. The market expected 79K new jobs, but the report showed 23K job losses. May and June were also revised down by a combined 103K jobs. This should get the Fed’s attention and slow the momentum toward a possible rate hike at its September 16 meeting. We will get one more jobs report on September 4, and that could be very influential in the Fed’s decision.

Rates had been trending higher partly because of concerns surrounding Japan and the weakening yen, which is near a 40 year low. Japan is the largest foreign holder of U.S. debt, so we need it to remain a strong buyer of our Treasuries.

If Japan needs to invest more money at home or sell U.S. debt, the Treasury may have to offer higher yields to attract other buyers. Higher Treasury yields take mortgage rates higher.

After today’s weak jobs report, we are seeing rates improve a little because it will be more difficult for the Fed to justify raising rates in September.

The Fed has two primary goals, to support employment and keep inflation under control. When employment weakens, that argues for lower rates. When inflation is too high, that argues for higher rates. Right now, those two forces are pulling in opposite directions.

Today’s report is encouraging for mortgage rates, but the more hawkish Fed members will likely want to see another weak jobs report before completely abandoning the possibility of a September hike.

Have you been at the Parade of Homes this year? My daughters and I visit Utah Valley Parade of Homes every year. Our favorite thing is to check out the latest trends. You can notice multiple similarities in them. If I were to build a luxury home today, I would definitely include a pool, home gym, fun playground in the basement and an amazing kitchen.
