The Highland Strip in the early ’70s bell bottoms on the sidewalk, neon signs glowing, and the soundtrack of Memphis youth pouring out of record shops and pool halls.
From Just Jeans to The Jeanery, from Base 4 to the Highland Cue, this stretch was more than a street it was a scene. Students, locals, and musicians all crossed paths here, chasing style, sound, and a late night bite.
McLaurine’s Bakery tempted the east side, Fletcher’s and Normal drugstores had soda fountains that stayed packed, and if you needed a hammer, Morris Hardware was right there. It was the kind of strip where you could shop, eat, play, and people watch all day.
By the late ’70s and beyond, the Strip began to change, but for those who walked it in its prime, the memories run deep: fresh jeans, jukeboxes, and that feeling that Memphis was always alive.
