Really positive development for homeowners and the housing market. 👏🏡
The capital gains exclusion on the sale of a primary residence hasn’t been meaningfully updated since 1997, despite decades of home-price appreciation.
Doubling the exclusion to $500,000 for individuals and $1 million for married couples, while indexing it for inflation going forward, makes a lot of sense.
It would allow homeowners to keep more of the equity they’ve built while also potentially removing a major deterrent for longtime owners who are considering selling, which could help bring more much-needed inventory to the market.
Hopefully Congress can get this one across the finish line.
