Every once in a while, I receive a phone call that reminds me exactly why I chose this career.
This morning, a past client called me at 7:00 am simply to say thank you.
The backstory: Last summer, my client made a major life decision to leave her home in Pennsylvania and move to Massachusetts with her two dogs for one very important reason: she wanted to be close to her son and her young grandchildren and have the opportunity to be part of their lives.
That was her mission, and somewhere along the way, it became mine as well.
She was recovering from an injury and couldn't travel to be here for the home search, so I became her eyes and ears. I toured dozens of homes over the course of about two months, took countless videos that I edited and sent her, walked neighborhoods, researched locations, commuting options, dog parks, and proximity to services she needed to be close to, and kept searching for the home that would allow her to begin this next chapter that she wanted so badly.
We finally found a home she loved, only to have the transaction fall apart just before closing through no fault of her own. All of her belongings had already been moved into the house, and what followed was an incredibly stressful few weeks as she was forced to live in a hotel with her two dogs while we fought to get her deposit released.
At that point, giving up wasn't an option. We were going to find another home and get her moved in. And we did.
She bought a beautiful home in Newton and began building the life she had envisioned when this journey started.
Over the past year, we've kept in close contact, and I've watched her settle into her new community. She has recovered from her injury and is able to return to the activities she loves and, most importantly, spend time with her grandchildren whenever the opportunity arises.
When we spoke on her birthday a few days ago, she was excited because she was going to see her grandchildren that afternoon. This morning, she called to tell me how wonderful their visit had been and how happy she was that her three-year-old granddaughter now loves spending time with her.
Then she thanked me for getting her here. For not giving up. She thanked me for touring all the homes, for the videos I sent her and for the hours I spent helping her find a home when she couldn't be here herself.
A home is rarely just a home. There is usually something much bigger behind a move, such as a person you want to be closer to, a new beginning you need, or a life you're hoping to create.
My job is to understand not only where my clients want to move, but why. And when I know how much that “why” matters, I become invested in the outcome too.
And today, hearing the happiness in her voice as she talked about her granddaughter, I was reminded that sometimes the greatest reward in this business has absolutely nothing to do with the closing.
