I’m taking a moment today to honor my incredible Uncle Jimmy, who passed on from this world last night. For me, he was the final link to my big, brave Greek family — people who crossed an ocean at great personal cost, and who knew how to thrive in the face of adversity.

My uncle Jimmy served his country, also at great personal cost. I knew him as a brilliant man who could fix anything — literally, anything — often using a cracker box, a ball of string and some scrap metal. He was ingenious, strong, and loving … and when my mother (his sister) passed away when I was just a boy, he knew how to reach out and make me feel seen and included — something that meant the world to a grieving little kid. As an adult, I now know he managed to love me this way even as he was carrying a heavy grief of his own. It feels like a humbling and undeserved gift.

Uncle Jimmy worked exceptionally hard and retired to a life with the things he loved — adventures on the open road, shady afternoons on the front porch of his home in Corpus Christi, and the faithful companionship of my Aunt Sharron, who was with him to the end. I count myself lucky to call them both my Family, and I hope to carry a little of my uncle’s spirit with me wherever I go.

Rest in peace, J.J. Chaconas. You’re a hero.

CLOSED! 🎉👏🏼 Yesterday, this home crossed the finish line for my sellers, who couldn’t have been kinder and more engaged throughout the process as we marketed their family home as part of an estate settlement.
