California's Dynamic Population Trends Highlight New Opportunities
It’s not every day we see California’s population shrink—yet, according to new research, our state was one of just five to lose residents last year. The numbers are small (a 0.02% dip, or about 9,465 people between 2024 and 2025), but even subtle shifts like this can have ripple effects on our communities and real estate market. U.S. growth overall slowed to under 1%, and Vermont led in population decline. California’s demographic profile is also evolving: our median age now sits at 39, with 5.21% of residents under 5 and 17.5% over 65.
