During a recent home inspection in Springfield, the crawlspace was too tight for the inspector to safely access—but that didn’t mean we stopped looking.

We sent in our Marten CrawlBot. 🔎

While navigating the restricted crawlspace, Marten identified a plumbing leak that could have easily gone unnoticed without further evaluation of the inaccessible area.

🚽 Out of Sight Shouldn’t Mean Out of Mind!

If your home has a septic system, regular maintenance can help prevent messy—and potentially expensive—problems.

Unlike a public sewer system, everything that goes down your drains eventually reaches your septic system. Taking care of it can help extend its life and reduce the chance of backups or failures.

A few important septic maintenance tips:

🔹 Have the tank inspected and pumped as needed
🔹 Avoid flushing wipes—even those labeled “flushable”
🔹 Keep grease, oils, chemicals, and other harmful materials out of drains
🔹 Be mindful of excessive water use
🔹 Know where your septic tank and drain field are located
🔹 Never drive or park vehicles over the tank or drain field
🔹 Watch for slow drains, sewage odors, wet areas, or unusually green grass around the system

A septic problem can be much more expensive than routine maintenance.

If you’re buying a home with a private well, water testing is an important part of knowing what you’re getting.

Water can look clear, smell normal, and taste fine while still containing contaminants that you can’t see.

🏠 Buying an Older Home in Springfield? Don’t Forget the Sewer Line.

Many older homes throughout Springfield have clay sewer lines—and while these lines can remain functional for decades, they can also develop problems that aren’t visible during a standard home inspection.

During sewer scope inspections, some of the common issues we look for with older clay lines include:

🔹 Root intrusion at pipe joints
🔹 Cracked or broken sections of pipe
🔹 Separated or offset joints
🔹 Low areas that hold water and debris

🚗 When was the last time you tested your garage door safety features?

Garage doors are heavy, and the automatic opener has important safety features that homeowners should check periodically.

A few simple things to look at:

👀 Make sure the photo-eye sensors near the floor are securely mounted and aligned.

🛑 Test the auto-reverse feature to make sure the door reverses when an obstruction is detected.

🔩 Look for loose or damaged hinges, rollers and hardware.

🧵 Check cables for visible fraying or damage — but don’t attempt to adjust cables or springs yourself.

🚪 Make sure the door moves smoothly without unusual shaking, binding or excessive noise.
