Not everything worth discovering is in the tourist towns. Sometimes you just jump in the car, take the scenic route, and let the road surprise you. 🛻🫎✨

Today, we stumbled upon the Legend of the Flying Moose. According to local lore from Maine’s Moosehead Lake region, a young Abenaki boy named Mahanak rescued and cared for an orphaned moose calf. One day, they were swept toward dangerous waterfalls. Because of the boy’s kindness and courage, the forest spirits intervened, allowing the moose to soar safely over the falls as if it had wings.

That night, the spirits appeared to Mahanak in a dream, telling him the moose had been chosen to watch over the forests, the wildlife, and all who treated nature with respect. From then on, the Flying Moose became a symbol of kindness, protection, and the magic that can be found in the wilderness.

Whether it’s an ancient legend or a cherished local folktale, one thing is certain: sometimes the best stories are the ones you weren’t looking for.
