One of the great things about muzzleloading is that it’s a sport you can discover at almost any age — and continue enjoying for decades.

Unlike sports that depend heavily on speed, strength, or endurance, muzzleloading rewards 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀, 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹. It’s about learning your equipment, refining your technique, and challenging yourself to improve — one shot at a time.

🎯 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗪𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗥 𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗦𝗔𝗬𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠? (𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝟭)

You might be surprised how many expressions we still use today have roots in 𝗺𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀! 💥

Here are a few you may recognize:

🔒 “𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗸, 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗹” — Meaning the whole thing or everything. The lock, stock, and barrel are three of the major components of a traditional firearm.

⚡ “𝗔 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗻” — Something that looks promising but quickly fizzles out. With a flintlock, the priming powder in the pan could ignite with a bright flash but fail to fire the main charge.

🎯 “𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁” — To give something a try or make an attempt. Sometimes you just have to take your shot!

💥 “𝗚𝗼 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳-𝗰𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱” — To act too quickly or before you're properly prepared. On traditional fi****ms, the half-cock position was part of the firing mechanism — and definitely not where you wanted things going off!

Who knew a little muzzleloading history was hiding in everyday conversation? 🤔

We’ve welcomed a lot of new followers since the beginning of August, so we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to introduce ourselves and share a little more about 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴!

🍁 The 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 (𝗖𝗜𝗠𝗟𝗧) was incorporated as the 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗠𝗟𝗜𝗠𝗟𝗔) in 1986, with the purpose of developing and organizing international muzzleloading as a competitive shooting sport in 𝗢𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼.

🏆 𝗠𝗟𝗜𝗠𝗟𝗔 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼, while 𝗖𝗜𝗠𝗟𝗧 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 including the MLAIC World Championships and Pacific Zone Championships.

📚 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲, 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 & 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 — Improving participants’ knowledge and skills in muzzleloading for both recreational and competitive purposes, while combining the preservation and study of historic fi****ms with formal precision target shooting.

🎯 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 — Competition includes 𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗹𝗲, 𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹/𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗴𝘂𝗻, using both original and reproduction historic types of matchlock, flintlock and percussion fi****ms under international rules.

🎯 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗢𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼’𝘀 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 ( Sport) 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀🎯

Provincial sport programming plays an important role in 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀, 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆. Support from our provincial government helps make it possible for our athletes to represent at the highest levels of muzzleloading competition and succeed.

At this year's 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝟯𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗟𝗔𝗜𝗖 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 in 𝗘𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗱𝘁, 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮, a biennial competition that draws over 360 world class athletes representing 23 countries, 𝗢𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝙇 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲.

Ontario Sport's continued support helps the Maple Leaf International Muzzle Loading Association focus on 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 and fostering the 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼.

Tanzutsu is an MLAIC event fired with traditional Japanese matchlock pistols — a design that 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸. Instead of a spark, the pistol is fired by lowering a 𝗹𝗶𝘁, 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 into a pan of priming powder.

It’s a fascinating combination of 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆, 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 — and just one example of the many disciplines that make muzzleloading such a unique shooting sport.
