What happens when you bring together curious newcomers, modern fi****ms, and a little black powder? 𝗔 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀 (𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗼𝗸𝗲)! 💨😎

We recently hosted a small range day where some new faces got the chance to experience both modern and traditional black powder shooting!

It was a great day of learning, trying something new, and sharing our passion for the shooting sports.

𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗺𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹— loading every shot by hand with black powder and a patched ball, then seeing the 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿.

The Maple Leaf International Muzzle Loading Association (MLIMLA) and the Canadian International Muzzle Loading Team (CIMLT) extend their deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the Canadian Armed Forces members who tragically lost their lives at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright Saturday night.

Our thoughts are also with those injured, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.

We stand with the entire Canadian Armed Forces community during this difficult time, honouring the service and sacrifice of those who lost their lives.

The very interesting history of r***e associations and regular competitions in Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley. 🎯

The first meeting to organize a r***e association in Ottawa was advertised in the Ottawa Citizen to be held on October 16, 1861. A two-day rail r***e match began that same day, with the prizes awarded ranging from $6 to $12.

In the midst of rising Civil War-era tensions between the United States and Great Britain, the formation of “r***e associations” was being encouraged to bolster preparedness in support of Canada’s militias.

As one example of the escalating frictions, in early November 1861, the U.S. Navy breached British neutrality by removing two Confederate diplomats from a British vessel on the high seas. In this pre-Confederation era, any war between Britain and the United States would automatically involve Canada as well.

Formation of affiliated r***e associations was encouraged, especially down th course of the Rideau Canal in communities such as Manotick, Burritts Rapids, Merrickville and Smiths Falls.

The first regular shooting competition held in Ottawa was in mid-August 1862 on the grounds at the end of Clarence Street. Awarding of the competition’s prizes was delayed until October when the Governor-General, Lord Monck, was scheduled to pay a visit to Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley (the Governor-General still resided in Quebec City in those days).

Dominion-wide competitions were later held in Ottawa at the Rideau range (today’s Strathcona Park) and at the Rockcliffe ranges (roughly the location of today’s Aviation Museum). After 1921, the Connaught Range played host to national competitions.

🇨🇦 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗚𝗨𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗬 𝗧𝗢 𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗡 𝗛𝗘𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦: 𝗦𝗜𝗥 𝗜𝗦𝗔𝗔𝗖 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗖𝗞 🎯

Born in Guernsey on 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟲, 𝟭𝟳𝟲𝟵, Major-General 𝗦𝗶𝗿 𝗜𝘀𝗮𝗮𝗰 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸 would become one of the best-known figures of the 𝗪𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝟭𝟴𝟭𝟮.

⚔️ In August 1812, Brock — working alongside Shawnee leader 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗵 and Indigenous allies — helped secure the surrender of Detroit.

Just two months later, on 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟯, 𝟭𝟴𝟭𝟮, Brock was killed while leading an attack to retake 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 in Upper Canada (near what is now known as Niagara Falls).

And at the centre of the British infantryman's experience was a fi***rm familiar to muzzleloaders today: the “𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘀” 𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗸𝗲𝘁.

Nearly a year after Brock's death, 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗵 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟱, 𝟭𝟴𝟭𝟯.

More than 200 years later, their stories also give us a glimpse into an era when 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗺𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮.

Every muzzleloader has a cleaning routine. Some keep it simple. Others have a system that could probably qualify as a chemistry experiment. 😄

Here’s why we’re asking:

🇨🇦 When the 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 travels to competitions, many solvents and oils can’t easily come with us on the plane.

So, we want to know:

⚔️ 𝗗𝗨𝗘𝗟𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗟𝗦, 𝗔 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗟𝗘… 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗔 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗞 😳

In 𝟭𝟴𝟳𝟯, Augustus “Gus” Healey and Denis “Din” Dooley found themselves competing for the affection of the same woman — 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 — in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Naturally, they decided there was only one reasonable way to settle the matter…

𝗔 𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹 𝗱𝘂𝗲𝗹. 😬

On 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟱, 𝟭𝟴𝟳𝟯, the two men met at 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗱, accompanied by their seconds. But there was a catch: their seconds had secretly 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹𝘀, leaving only blank charges.

💥 The pistols fired.

Dooley promptly 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱.

Healey, apparently believing he had just killed his rival, was horrified. Once the trick was revealed, you might think everyone shook hands and went home.

Nope.

🥊 They decided to settle things with their 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 — and Healey reportedly won that round.

And Miss White?

She chose 𝗻𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. 😂

The encounter is often described as the 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗶𝗹 — although Newfoundland would not become part of Canada until 1949.

We’re the 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 (𝗖𝗜𝗠𝗟𝗧), also known as the 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗠𝗟𝗜𝗠𝗟𝗔) which we were incorporated as in 1986.
