Canada Housing Starts Trend Down 1.3%
Keeping an eye on Canada’s housing market is part of staying ahead for buyers, sellers, and investors alike. Recent data shows the six-month trend for housing starts across Canada slipped about 1% month-over-month in mid-third quarter, coming in at roughly 244,000 annualized units. Meanwhile, the monthly annualized rate held steady around 229,000. In larger centres—places I know well from my years working in London and beyond—actual starts hit 17,700 in mid-Q3, a 2% dip year-over-year. Over the first eight months of the year, that brings us to 149,500 starts, about 4% lower than last year’s pace. Homes under construction in cities over 50,000 people edged down less than 1% to 371,700, which, despite the slight cooling, means there’s still a significant pipeline. Completions fell more sharply, down about 11% month-over-month to 17,600, while unstarted but approved permits ticked up just under 1% to 142,400—an indicator that future projects are still lining up. The national outlook notes that while starts remain higher than the last few years, we should expect a continued moderation as the year wraps up. For those navigating residential or commercial opportunities, understanding this trend is crucial to making informed decisions—something I’m always watching closely here in London and across Ontario.
