20+ years later and Karl’s passion is stronger than ever but his game has changed. Now a father of four: Naomi , Arie, Maaike, Bodie. The North-End of St. Catharines has been through a lot this month, but our community spirit isn’t going anywhere.

This has been my mantra when it has come to the remediation and upcoming renovations on our basement. We have had to make so many decisions that you get the sense of what Yogi was talking about. It’s better to make a quick decision and correct it than sit on the fence watching while your home is filling UP with over 3 ft of sewage water!
These have been gnarly waves!  

Thus, it happened and we all have been barrel-rolled on a rip curl, with just enough time to come UP for air. Yeah, it was just stuff (but some irreplaceable).

And yet, Summer is still here, and we gotta still have some fun! Especially those with kids. They’re looking, watching & learning. It’s important to say Surf’s UP, and ride the wave.  

As I catch my breath, I wonder what will happen to real estate in the areas most affected.

In the short term, buyers are certainly going to be asking and cautious about the flooding. Sump pumps, back flow valves, weeping tiles, and grading are all looked at in a different way now. Long term, what about the mold?

I can see more offer clauses relating to the flood coming into our world, new protocols for inspectors, and insurance will be considered in these areas at time of purchase. Infill development will be looked at differently too. Two homes get knocked down and low-rise apartments on main streets will face greater community scrutiny. Can the system handle more?  

At first glance, it appears the politicians see us, and they should - it’s election season after all. Perhaps the North-End won’t have a permanent mark, but will just get stronger, and even more desirable once the investments happen and we are all more prepared.  

I have said it before and will say it again - the North-End always has been and always will be one of the best neighbourhoods in the Niagara Region.
