I've been working with boomers and seniors for close to six years now. Nothing has changed about the way I feel helping to make a difference in someone else's life - it's just that I've helped more seniors live their best life possible.
I never expected to become a real estate agent.
Until now, I’ve had two careers in my lifetime – the first was in marketing and communications. The second one was in hospitality. I helped my husband run his four businesses in the entertainment field.
It was only when we closed his business several years ago, that I had to make some job decisions.
I wanted my remaining working life to mean something. Running a restaurant wasn’t really rewarding for me. I was happy when folks had a nice meal and a good time, but it's not like I impacted their lives.
Not long before we closed the business, one of my senior aunt and uncles were having issues aging in place. They had no children of their own. I had always watched them and looked out for their welfare.
An undiagnosed stroke had left my aunt with dementia – no longer able to care for herself and her husband. He had a hip replacement and wasn’t very mobile.
I helped them decide that it was time to sell their home. I showed them how nice retirement living could be at the Shannex complex in Quispamsis. A move like that would allow them to live semi-independently.
I had the house sold, and contents downsized, and they were living in Shannex within two months.
I had prior experience with all that, having taken care of my parent’s estate. I also took care of the downsizing details for my elderly mother-in-law.
It became clear to me that my new role would be to help boomers and seniors in the next stages of their lives.
I could do that by becoming a real estate specialist. I am certified with the Canadian Real Estate Association as a Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES). I am also an affiliate with Lifestyle 55+.
Over 45 percent of our population in Saint John is over the age of 55 - so there’s lots of work to be done in this field. Now I love what I do and hope I'm making an impact on people's lives.
