So I'm sitting at a Richard Florida keynote, and he drops this take: younger generations are becoming more transient โ chasing careers, not roots โ and as a result, they're less inclined to tie themselves down with a mortgage. More renting, less owning.
Hear me out though. ๐ค
What if that's backwards? What if a condo isn't the thing tying you down โ it's the thing setting you free? You move to Calgary for the job? Cool, rent it out. Someone else's paycheque chips away at your mortgage while your equity quietly grows in the background like a plant you forgot to kill. It's not a ball and chain, it's a financial passenger seat โ diversifying your portfolio while you're off "finding yourself" in Vancouver or Berlin or wherever career opportunity #4 takes you.
Renting forever means someone else's mortgage gets paid down. Owning strategically means yours does โ even when you're not the one living there. Florida's right that we're more mobile than ever. He might be wrong about what that means for real estate.
