Kinda chic to love where you live.

And after living in Toronto for more than two decades, I still genuinely love calling this city home.

I love that on a random Saturday, we can grab dim sum in North York, head downtown for a festival, have dinner somewhere completely different, and still be home in our quiet neighbourhood by the end of the night.

I love that my kids are growing up surrounded by people from all over the world.

Different languages. Different foods. Different traditions. Different stories.

To them, that’s just normal life.

I love that we get four completely different seasons.

Summer evenings by the waterfront. Fall colours in the ravines. Skiing, snowboarding and skating in the winter. That first warm patio day in spring when the entire city suddenly comes alive again.

I love that there’s always something happening.

Street festivals. Farmers’ markets. Concerts. Sports. Theatre. Neighbourhood events. New restaurants. Parks. Trails. Beaches.

But what I probably appreciate most is that Toronto gives our family access to a big city without feeling like we have to live in the middle of one.

We live in a quiet residential neighbourhood in North York.
We have a backyard. Parks nearby. Schools and community around us.

Yet downtown is still close enough for a spontaneous night out, Pearson airport is accessible when we want to travel, and when we need nature, we can be outside the city exploring within a couple of hours.

Is Toronto perfect? Definitely not.

Housing is expensive. Traffic can test your patience. Winter occasionally makes you question your life choices.

But somewhere along the way, I stopped thinking about where else I’d rather live and started appreciating just how much we have right here.

Maybe loving where you live is actually kinda chic.

And Toronto, I still choose you. ❤️

A new Sicilian street food spot has opened in Toronto.

Ammucca is now serving authentic Sicilian eats in Corso Italia at 1154 St. Clair Ave. W.

Here’s what you can expect:

Side effects of living in Toronto may include…

1️⃣ Becoming a food snob without realizing it.

The Michelin Guide features around 90 restaurants in Toronto and the surrounding area, but some of my favourite meals are still the little neighbourhood spots.

Vietnamese pho. Korean BBQ. Persian kebabs. Japanese ramen. Jamaican jerk. Italian pasta. Dim sum. Thai food.

You can basically eat your way around the world without leaving the city.

2️⃣ Thinking 20 minutes is enough for a completely different experience.

We can go from our quiet North York neighbourhood to downtown for a Raptors game, concert, museum, or dinner, then come home to a quieter residential neighbourhood.

I love having access to both.

3️⃣ Your kids grow up thinking multiculturalism is completely normal.

Different languages, foods, traditions, and cultures are simply part of everyday life here.

As someone who moved to Canada from Vietnam at 18 years old, I really appreciate this about raising our kids in Toronto.

4️⃣ Having way too many options every weekend.

Festivals. Markets. Concerts. Sports. Parks. Neighbourhood events.

The problem isn’t finding something to do. It’s deciding what to choose.

5️⃣ Forgetting you live in Canada’s biggest city.

One minute you’re surrounded by traffic and buildings. Then you turn onto a trail and suddenly you’re walking through a ravine surrounded by trees.

That contrast is one of my favourite things about Toronto.

6️⃣ Getting spoiled by having an international airport so close by.

From North York, Pearson is about a 20–30 minute drive, with direct flights around the world.

A weekend getaway, family vacation, or trip back to Asia doesn’t have to start with a long journey to the airport.

Toronto definitely isn’t perfect. But after living here for so many years and raising our family here, these are things I’ve probably started taking for granted.

A massive redevelopment has been proposed for North York.

The Victoria Square Shopping Plaza at Sheppard and Victoria Park could be replaced with seven towers up to 49 storeys tall, bringing more than 3,600 new condo units, retail space, a public park, and new cycling infrastructure.

The proposal would be built in phases and is also designed with a possible future Line 4 subway extension in mind.
