Did you know North Rosedale used to have its own palace?

The grand, arched hall in this photo was Chorley Park. Completed in 1915, this French château served as Ontario's ultra-luxurious Government House, outshining Ottawa’s Rideau Hall.

But... its luxury became its downfall. Shut down in 1937 due to high maintenance costs, the grand estate was stripped of its fixtures during WWII to serve as a military hospital for wounded soldiers. By 1960, the city bought the property for just $100,000 and demolished it to save money.

Today, all that remains of Toronto’s greatest lost mansion is the public park bearing its name.

We remember the children who never came home from residential schools, honour the survivors and their families, and acknowledge the intergenerational harm still felt today.

Orange Shirt Day began with Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor whose new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at school. Her story is why we wear orange on September 30.

Home is tied to land, and the land we live and work on carries a history that deserves to be known. Reconciliation is ongoing, and it begins with listening, learning, and acting.

Have you ever wondered why Yonge and St. Clair is called Deer Park?

Long before it was office towers and espresso bars, it was a hotel where guests fed real deer that roamed the grounds.

The building in this photo was originally the Deer Park Hotel, which opened on the northeast corner of the intersection in the 1850s.

Back then, it was a country getaway where patrons would sit outside and hand-feed wild deer. By the early 1900s, around the time this photo was taken, it was known as Seller's Hotel.

Every busy intersection has a past you’d never guess standing in it.

Next time you're catching the subway or grabbing a coffee at Yonge and St. Clair, picture a wooden hotel, 40 acres of beautiful parkland, and wild deer roaming the grounds.
