The Shelter is wholly owned by the charity, having been purchased from Colchester Borough Council using funding from the National Lottery. We underwent a refurbishment last year and are now open and accepting residents. For more information, you can phone, email us, or go to our website.

Real people. Real stories. Real progress. 💙

When this resident first arrived at CENS, he told us he was “very stressed, anxious, mentally drained” and felt as though he had nowhere else to go and no one to turn to.

But from the moment he arrived, things began to change.

“From day one my worries and tension started to heal and I knew I’d made the right decision.”

For us, that’s what CENS is about. Providing somewhere safe and welcoming, but also giving people the time, support and stability they need to start looking forward again.

And perhaps the most powerful part of his story?

“CENS really have changed my life.”

PROTECT. PROGRESS. PREVENT.

Three simple words that sum up what CENS has always been about.

PROTECT - providing a safe room, a warm meal and somewhere to feel secure when someone needs us most.

PROGRESS- working alongside each resident to rebuild confidence, tackle the challenges they face and take their next steps towards independence.

PREVENT - helping people build the skills, support and stability they need so that, when they leave CENS, they have the best possible chance of never experiencing homelessness again.

We’ve been doing this in Colchester for over 40 years.

Now we have three little words that say it perfectly.

DID YOU KNOW?

Sometimes the biggest changes start with something very simple: time.

When someone arrives at CENS, getting them safely through the door is just the beginning.

There may be confidence to rebuild. Health or financial problems to tackle. Skills to develop. Trust to regain. And, ultimately, a safe and sustainable home to find.

That doesn’t happen overnight.

That’s why this statistic means so much to us: 77% of residents who stayed at CENS for more than 28 days achieved a positive move-on.

Give someone safety. Give them support. Give them time. And you give them a much better chance to move forward.

That’s what we mean by:

PROTECT - People from the dangers of homelessness.
PROGRESS - Towards a safe, independent future.
PREVENT- Homelessness happening again.

And every person we help to move forward is one more positive story for Colchester.

Here’s this week’s menu at CENS

A big shout-out to Emma, our kitchen co-ordinator who plans and cooks nutritious meals every day, making the most of pantry supplies, generous donations and FareShare produce.

But mealtimes are about more than food. They’re a chance to sit down together, relax, chat and enjoy some company.

💙 Why do so many CENS residents move on successfully?

Because we do things differently.

At CENS, finding someone a home isn’t the end. We know that lasting change takes time, trust and the right support.

Our residents are supported to build the practical skills, confidence and networks they need to live independently. And when they move into our move-on accommodation, that relationship doesn’t simply end.

For residents who stayed at CENS for more than 28 days, 77% moved on positively.

Our aim is not simply to help someone out of homelessness today. It’s to reduce the chances of them ever experiencing homelessness again.

A home matters. Helping someone keep it matters just as much.

Your support really does change lives. 💙

Our shelter is currently full, and with the cost of living continuing to rise, it costs more than ever to provide the everyday things our residents need.

A donation to CENS helps provide much more than a room. It means a safe place to stay, freshly cooked meals, practical support and, importantly, someone there to help people work towards a safe, independent future.

We’re incredibly lucky to have a local community that has supported CENS for many years. Every donation, however big or small, helps us continue to be here for people who need us.

🔑 What happens after someone leaves a homeless shelter?

Finding a home is a huge step. But after a period of homelessness, going straight from a supported shelter to living completely independently can be a daunting one.

That’s where our move-on homes come in.

They provide the important next step between shelter and independence – a safe, stable home with CENS support still there when it’s needed.

It gives residents time to build confidence, develop skills and get used to managing their own home before taking that final step into fully independent living.

Because at CENS, success isn’t simply helping someone out of homelessness.

It’s helping them build a future where they don’t return to it. 💙

Who doesn’t love a freshly cooked Sunday roast?

Today, some of our residents took over the CENS kitchen and cooked Sunday lunch for everyone - and it went down a treat!

It might seem like a small thing, but cooking and eating together can mean a lot. It’s a chance to learn skills, build confidence, have a chat and a laugh, and simply enjoy being part of something.

And somehow, food always tastes that little bit better when you’ve cooked it together.

A huge thank you to our wonderful community for your continued donations and support. They help us make sure our residents can sit down to a freshly cooked meal every evening - something we’re incredibly proud to provide.

Today, though, the residents were in charge of the kitchen. And judging by those plates, they did a pretty good job!

So much more than a shelter.

Did you know CENS also provides move-on accommodation?

Our move-on homes give former shelter residents a safe, supported next step as they build confidence and move towards fully independent living.

And right now, all of our move-on accommodation is full.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing more about our move-on homes, the people they support and why they’re such an important part of the CENS journey.

A safe place today. A brighter future tomorrow. 💙
