You hope you’ll never need this information. But if you ever do, you’ll be glad you prepared before you needed it.

A house fire is devastating enough without having to remember every item you owned, every improvement you made, and every detail of your home while trying to navigate an insurance claim.

A few things worth doing now:

• Take a video of your entire home—every room, closet, cabinet, garage, basement, and storage area.
• Photograph valuable items individually and save receipts and appraisals digitally.
• Keep records of renovations and improvements, including appliances, cabinetry, flooring, lighting, roofing, HVAC, and windows.
• Review your dwelling coverage based on the cost to rebuild—not simply your home’s market value.
• Ask whether your personal property is covered at replacement cost or actual cash value.
• Check whether jewelry, art, collectibles, and other higher-value items need additional scheduled coverage.
• Know your Loss of Use/Additional Living Expense limits in case you need temporary housing.
• Store your documentation in the cloud—not only somewhere inside your house.
• Review your coverage annually and after major renovations or purchases.

And one of the easiest things you can do? Take five minutes today and walk through your house with your phone recording. It doesn’t need to be perfect. Having a dated visual record of your home and belongings could make an enormous difference if you ever have to document a loss.

As a Realtor, I spend a lot of time thinking about protecting the value of a home—not just buying and selling one. This is one of those homeowner tasks that’s easy to put off, but absolutely worth doing.

We all remember where we were.

We remember how the news reached us, who we were with, and the disbelief as we tried to comprehend what was happening. We each have our own story from September 11, 2001, but so many of us remember the same feeling—the world suddenly felt uncertain, and our sense of security was shaken in a way we had never experienced before.

Today, I remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the first responders and ordinary people who showed extraordinary courage.

I pray we never experience a day like that again. May we never forget the lives lost, the sacrifices made, and how deeply that day changed us all.
