Have you ever experienced a Mobile Bay jubilee, or heard stories about one from your parents or grandparents? 👇🦀🐟

Along parts of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, a rare natural phenomenon called a jubilee occasionally happens when thousands of fish, blue crabs, shrimp, and other marine life suddenly gather in extremely shallow water near the shoreline. When word spreads that a jubilee is happening, locals often grab buckets, nets, and flashlights and head straight for the bay.

Jubilees are most commonly associated with the eastern shore of Mobile Bay and have been part of Gulf Coast folklore for generations. Scientists believe they occur when a combination of weather, tides, water temperature, and low oxygen levels pushes marine life toward the shoreline.

It’s one of the most unique natural events in Alabama—and one that many lifelong residents still get excited about every time it happens.
