Did you know that the very tradition we observe today traces its roots just down the road from us? In 1866, the residents of Waterloo, New York — less than 90 miles away — held the first complete, community-wide observance of Memorial Day. Businesses closed, flags flew at half-staff, and townspeople marched to the village cemeteries to decorate the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers with wreaths and flowers. It was a moment of profound community — neighbors coming together on hallowed ground to say: we remember you.
In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson and Congress officially recognized Waterloo as the Birthplace of Memorial Day — a distinction our region carries with quiet pride to this day.
