🍂 Fall Garden Cleanup: What to Cut Back Now vs. What to Leave Alone 🍂

As the temps start to drop here in the St. Louis area, it's the perfect time to get your yard ready for winter — but not everything needs to be cut back right away! Here's a quick guide:

✂️ Trim back NOW:

Hostas (once foliage yellows/dies back)
Peonies (cut to the ground to prevent disease overwintering)
Daylilies (remove spent foliage)
Irises (trim leaves to about 4-6 inches)
Annual flowers and vegetable garden debris (pull spent plants)
Diseased or pest-infested perennial foliage (always remove regardless of type)

🌿 Leave standing until spring:

Ornamental grasses (they add winter interest and protect the crown from freeze/thaw damage)
Coneflowers, Black-Eyed Susans & other seed-head perennials (birds love the seeds all winter!)
Sedum (Autumn Joy and similar varieties look great covered in frost)
Hydrangeas (most varieties — pruning now can remove next year's blooms)
Roses (wait until after the last hard freeze to avoid stimulating new growth)
Butterfly bush and other tender woody perennials (winter dieback protects the roots)

A little patience now means healthier plants and more pollinator/bird habitat this winter — then a fresh start in spring!
