There are things your NDIS planner should tell you; but often doesn’t.

If you disagree with your NDIS plan or feel your funding doesn’t reflect your actual needs, you have options. You can request an internal review and, if needed, seek an external review.

If you have significant housing needs, Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) may be relevant to your NDIS plan. If your planner hasn’t raised SDA, you can raise it yourself and ask whether you may be eligible.

You also have the right to choose your support coordinator. If they aren’t advocating for you, helping you understand your options or communicating effectively, you are not stuck with them. Choice and control means having a say in who supports you.

Most importantly, your NDIS plan should reflect your goals and aspirations, not simply your disability or day-to-day support needs. Your independence, housing and life goals should be part of the conversation.

Understanding your rights and options can help you make more informed decisions about your future.

MYTH BUSTED: More SDA places means an area is oversupplied.

It’s easy to look at the total number of Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) places in a region and assume that a higher number means there is already enough housing. But SDA supply is more complex than a simple count.

Effective local SDA planning needs to consider demand, existing supply, design categories, location and the future development pipeline. The needs of participants can vary significantly depending on their circumstances, support requirements and preferred location.

This means a region can appear well supplied overall while still experiencing a shortage of the right type of SDA in the right location. Looking at the numbers without understanding what sits behind them can lead to poor planning decisions and housing that doesn’t meet actual participant needs.

At KinKera Community, we believe better housing outcomes start with better data, deeper local insights and a clear understanding of where genuine gaps exist.

When housing planning starts too late, people can end up staying in hospital longer than they need to.

Across Australia, there are people who are medically ready for discharge but remain in hospital because suitable housing has not yet been identified.

The issue isn’t always funding. Often, it’s planning.

Housing conversations need to start early; not when a discharge date is already set.

When hospitals, support coordinators, therapists, allied health professionals and housing providers work together from the beginning, better outcomes become possible.

The earlier the conversation starts, the sooner people can move towards the right home and the right support.

Because everyone deserves the opportunity to recover in a home, not remain in hospital simply because suitable housing hasn’t been planned for.
