Hereโs what the next four months actually look like for those of us who live here.
This week kicks off with the Bloomington Early Music Festival, May 26-30. A full week of free concerts and workshops with the theme โEarly Music + Early America.โ ๐ป
The Saturday morning farmers market at Showers Common, 8 AM to 1 PM, every Saturday from April through October. Itโs the weekly ritual that defines the season. Fresh produce, fresh bread, fresh flowers, people you know, more tomatoes than you can reasonably eat. ๐
Switchyard Park has become the cultural anchor of summer. Food Truck Friday every Friday from 11 AM to 9 PM, April through October. The Granfalloon Festival moved its main stage concerts there this year, with summer shows on June 20, July 18, and August 29. July 18 features Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, two of the most respected names in American folk music. Most events are free. ๐ถ
Taste of Bloomington on August 1 takes over Kirkwood Avenue with all food $5 or less, live music on multiple stages, the whole town turning out.
Plus Movies in the Park, kayaking at Griffy Lake, the Peopleโs Co-op Market, free concerts in the parks all summer through Bloomington Parks and Recreation.
The thing newcomers always underestimate about Bloomington is the cultural calendar. A city of 85,000 people sustaining this much programming, most of it free, partnered between the university and the city, is genuinely unusual. People who move here from bigger places start texting friends back home asking why nobody told them about this place.
The summer scene is part of why people who live in Bloomington donโt want to be anywhere else. ๐ป
