There is something new to see at SFMOMA, and it might be one of the most spectacular installations to arrive in San Francisco this year.

Artist Jacob Hashimoto’s Giant Arc brings nearly 75,000 colorful, kite-like elements together in a massive installation that cascades through the gallery like a floating canopy. Made from bamboo and printed Japanese paper, the work shifts throughout the day as natural light moves through the museum.

It is Hashimoto’s largest installation to date, and it is designed to create a sense of wonder for visitors of all ages. Even better, San Franciscans will have plenty of time to experience it because Giant Arc is expected to remain on view through mid-2028.

One of my favorite things about living in San Francisco is that there is always something new to experience, even in the places you think you already know.

Just when you think you know Golden Gate Park, there is something new to discover.

Beyond the museums and familiar landmarks, the park is filled with hidden corners that even longtime San Franciscans may have missed. There is an old-growth oak forest, a tucked-away fuchsia garden, a public archery range, quiet lakes, observatory ruins, a disc golf course, and even a tiny museum hidden inside a former bank vault.

You can watch the bison gather for their midday feeding, wander through the Moon Viewing Garden, or stop by the golf course clubhouse for the famous Burgerdog without ever picking up a golf club.

Two tech-driven cities are suddenly telling two very different real estate stories.

San Francisco’s housing market is gaining momentum while Seattle’s is moving in the opposite direction. In July, San Francisco’s median sale price rose 6 percent year over year, while active listings fell more than 18 percent. At the same time, home sales increased 8.5 percent.

One of the forces behind that shift is the growing impact of AI wealth. Compensation, signing bonuses, and the concentration of AI companies in San Francisco are translating into purchasing power, particularly at the higher end of the market. Bay Area luxury home prices have risen 13.4 percent in the two years following the launch of ChatGPT.

Seattle, meanwhile, is experiencing rising inventory, declining sales, and greater uncertainty following layoffs across several major tech employers. The contrast is a reminder of just how closely housing can follow the industries and employment trends shaping a city.

For San Francisco, the numbers point to something we have been watching closely. Demand is strengthening, available inventory is tightening, and the city’s position at the center of the AI economy is increasingly showing up in the housing market.

Clement Street is changing, but the story is not as simple as what is opening and what is closing.

This fall, the Inner Richmond corridor is seeing established operators choose Clement Street for their next chapter. Rose Pizzeria has already brought lines to the neighborhood, Kitchen Commons is preparing to open in the former Spanish Table space, and Roots & Craft Tea Roasters is working toward its Clement Street debut.

At the same time, longtime businesses and neighborhood staples continue to anchor the street. The Sunday farmers market remains a weekly tradition, and Green Apple Books continues to bring people to the corridor.

There have been closures, too, but the bigger picture tells an interesting story. Established operators with successful concepts elsewhere are actively choosing Clement Street, which says a lot about the confidence they have in this part of San Francisco.

A firehouse, a coffee shop, and a new gathering place for the community.

After sitting mostly empty for nearly 13 years, Graton’s historic firehouse is getting a new life as Graton Station, the small Sonoma County town’s first dedicated coffee shop. A weekend coffee cart is already serving espresso and pastries while construction continues on a full café and bakery.

The vision goes far beyond coffee. The completed space is expected to include communal tables, breakfast and lunch, housemade breads and pastries, and space for dinners, live music, classes, and other community gatherings. The menu will also highlight seasonal ingredients from local farms and producers.

Next door, plans for Graton’s first official public town square are adding even more momentum to this small downtown. Together, the projects are turning a historic corner into a place for neighbors to gather, eat, and spend time together.

It is a great reminder that sometimes the most exciting changes are the ones that give an old building an entirely new purpose.
